Currently on: From Kashmir to Kandy: A South Asian Odyssey. Celebrating the diversity and vibrance of South Asia through the John Rylands Library's collections of South Asian books, manuscripts and archives. Exhibition from 2 June to 29 September.
This is a really interesting exhibition, showing a huge variety of antique books from South Asia. Each is immaculate. there is also a room explaining the heritage of type.
I think its amazing how all over the world at various times people have invented type and a way of reproducing it to spread knowledge - mainly about religion.
The library itself is also an attraction. It has been renovated recently with a new entrance and improvements throughout. I really liked the juxtaposition of the old Victorian building (built in the Gothic style) and the new minimalist white spaces, glass and lighting. They have kept the old gas fittings which now emit and bright white light, however the library still retains a dark, cosy feel, with the light directed accurately. Its a really special atmosphere.
