Early Advertising

trade advertisements 1879 - 1914.

The way advertising has evolved over the years is really intriguing, developments in technology and social movements have pushed the methods and the how a message is conveyed.

I really like the simple honesty of early advertisements where the features of a product sold it rather than the brand image and conformity. There is a simplicity without photographs, just typefaces and size of the text to distinguish the hierarchy of information.

I have got hold of my grandma's 1920's copy of Mrs Beetons House Keeping Guide, which has lots of illustrations and trade advertisements for cookers and ingredients! Its a fascinating piece of social history, but as a designer it also holds inspiration for a modern take or a vintage styled campaigns. (like Ted Bakers Spring Sale campaign 08)

Like some of the other posts this is another example of a hand rendered message, this time mass produced. The inclusion of hand printed techniques would yield interesting results.
